More Than the Numbers: Influence the Decisions Behind Them
Hillery Group is looking for a full-time Commercial Finance Manager based in Bowen or Airlie Beach, Queensland.
Reporting to the Director of Finance and Commercial and working as part of a small Finance Team, you will take a senior, hands-on role supporting commercial and operational leaders with accurate financial information, meaningful analysis and practical commercial insight.
Working closely with directors across different areas of the business, you will build trusted relationships, adapt your approach to different working styles and provide the financial perspective leaders need to make informed commercial decisions.
More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Prepare detailed job-level budgets and forecasts, oversee project and job costing, and monitor financial performance
- Prepare P&Ls, management reports and director or board-level reporting packs with meaningful commentary
- Partner with operational leaders and directors to interpret financial results, strengthen accountability and support commercial decision-making
- Provide financial modelling and analysis to support tender, pricing and other commercial activities
- Manage the Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable team and support effective finance operations
- Identify and implement improvements across financial reporting, processes, controls and broader commercial initiatives
This newly created position will play an important role in strengthening Hillery Group’s commercial finance capability as the business continues to grow. Bringing proven, hands-on experience, you’ll help improve financial visibility and accountability, strengthen budgeting and forecasting, and provide leaders with the commercial insight they need to make confident decisions.
Bring the Detail. See the Bigger Picture.
Your qualifications and background matter, but demonstrated capability will be key to your success.
You will bring proven, hands-on commercial finance experience, with the ability to confidently prepare and interpret P&Ls, budgets, forecasts, management reports, director or board packs, job costing information and financial models.
Just as importantly, you’ll know how to turn the numbers into action. You’ll be comfortable partnering with directors and operational leaders, explaining financial information to non-finance stakeholders and providing commercial insight that strengthens decision-making and accountability.
You will also bring:
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy
- Advanced Excel skills and strong financial modelling capability
- Strong project and job costing experience, including inventory, WIP and unit-cost analysis
- Proven business partnering and senior stakeholder relationship skills
- Team leadership experience and a hands-on approach to finance
- Strong understanding of accounting principles and month-end processes
- Strong written communication skills, particularly across commercial and tender documentation
Experience within quarrying or mining will be strongly regarded, with Hillery Group also open to candidates who have developed relevant commercial finance expertise within other operational, project-based or cost-intensive environments.
A CIMA, MBA, Master’s in Finance or CA/CPA qualification will be highly regarded. Experience with Power BI, MYOB AccountRight, Microsoft Business Central, ERP implementation, civil construction finance, tax compliance, statutory reporting or audit will also be advantageous.
Beyond your technical capability, you’ll know how to speak to the numbers and bring them to life. You’ll build strong relationships at a senior level, ask thoughtful questions and provide valuable commercial perspectives that help leaders make informed decisions.
Adaptability will also be important. Working within a growing, medium-sized family business, you’ll be comfortable adjusting priorities when needed, including supporting time-sensitive tenders and operational requirements.
With a team-first mentality and a good sense of humour, you’ll enjoy being part of a collaborative and lively workplace where finance is closely connected to the broader business and relationships matter just as much as the numbers.
Rewarding Work with Room to Make an Impact
Hillery Group offers a competitive salary package circa $140,000, commensurate with skills and experience, together with the opportunity to step into a senior position where your expertise can make a meaningful contribution.
You will also benefit from:
- Genuine work-life balance within a long-standing, family-owned business
- Direct access to and collaboration with senior decision-makers
- The opportunity to influence financial accountability and commercial performance
- Autonomy to identify opportunities and improve financial processes
- A collaborative and supportive team environment
- The opportunity to contribute to Hillery Group’s continued growth and transformation
This is an opportunity to apply your experience somewhere it can make a visible difference, while becoming part of an established business entering its next stage of growth.
Your Career in the Whitsundays
Based in Bowen or Airlie Beach, this opportunity combines a meaningful senior finance career with the lifestyle of one of Queensland’s most distinctive coastal regions.
You’ll spend 2 to 3 days each week in Hillery Group’s Bowen office, providing valuable face-to-face time with the directors, operational leaders and teams you’ll support.
Known as the “Top of the Whitsundays”, Bowen offers eight beautiful beaches, a relaxed community lifestyle and access to the wider Whitsundays. From swimming and fishing to boating, diving and exploring the Great Barrier Reef, the region offers plenty to enjoy outside of work.
For candidates considering a move to the region, relocation support may be discussed based on individual circumstances and local accommodation availability.
